Musical Director
Steve Merrony
The choir appointed Steve Merrony as Musical Director in 2008.
Steve started his musical life as a treble in a church choir and went on to study clarinet with John Reynolds at the Watford School of Music, then at Cardiff University where voice was his second study.
After leaving university he took up a career in the City, but continued singing with various groups including the North London Chorus and the Oriana Choir. In the 1990's he formed and directed the Vocal Minority male voice choir which explored the undeservedly neglected 'classical' repertoire. In 1993 he conducted the first public performance of parts of Andy's Requiem with three choirs at St Martin-in-the-Fields.
More recently he played clarinet with the Bartholomew Trio in London. He has arranged or edited numerous works for various choirs, including a performing edition of Donizetti's Miserere for male voices.
He is the author of the GENPO organ software which has been used on professional recordings, and other software for the Electric Wind Instrument which he also plays. He has recently developed aABC, a mobile app for smartphones and tablets which lets you use ABC music on-the-go.
He is a firm believer in the importance of local music making and is pleased to have been involved with Egham Choral since moving to Runnymede in 2004.
After a career in IT in the City he returned to music full-time in 2009. Further details of his teaching and other musical activities may be found at www.stephenmerrony.co.uk
